Boruca Community 

Boruca is an indigenous tribe in South-Pacific Costa Rica, located among the Talamanca Mountains 20 km from Panama. The Boruca tribe is estimated to have around 2,000 members and is located on an indigenous reserve, where about 140 km² of land are protected for their use.

Day 3 - 1/11/24 (Evelyn S)

     Today was the third day in Costa Rica! we started off with an amazing breakfast of chia pudding that had some granola and vegan ice cream. We went on an hour bus ride to Sierpe which is a small town where we took a boat to Cano Island. The boat ride to Cano Island was about one hour with beautiful views. On the way there we stopped for a few minutes because we spotted some monkeys! there were two species that we saw Squirrel monkeys and Capuchin monkeys.       When we got closer to Cano Island we saw some dolphins! We arrived at Cano Island and we started to put all the snorkeling gear on. We saw many species of fish for example: Angelfish, Triggerfish, Snappers, and even a turtle! we learned about the islands that were around us for example Violencitos Island. We listened to whales that were in the area, and we learned how to open coconuts and the water quality of the ocean by testing oxygen, phosphates, and nitrates. We had an amazing experience...

Day 2 - 1/10/2024 - Arriving at Innoceana

Today was the second day of our Costa Rica J-Term! The students were woken up and had breakfast at 9:00 am, before having some free time prior to our bus ride. After a swim at the hotel pool, the students packed up and left the hotel on a bus to Ojochal, home of our partner organization, Innoceana. After a stop for lunch, and periodic bathroom breaks, we arrived at the headquarters of MCEC Innoceana.  Once the students had unpacked and gotten settled in their rooms, we were introduced to some of the staff, and had an introduction to the Innoceana organization, and the work they do in Costa Rica. After this, we tried on some equipment for our snorkeling expedition to Cano Island tomorrow!  We also had a lesson about fish identification, which will be the focus of our excursion. As is the nature of folklore, there are many variations of these stories, and this collection is only a brief anthology of retellings that I found online. Borucan Legends The Pigs and the Two Villages Many people used to live along the Rio Terraba. The people were so numerous that they had eaten all the animals. The people were so numerous that they had eaten all the plants. All the wildlife was gone, except for one group of pigs. Some of the people chased these pigs with their bows and arrows. The people chased the pigs across the mountains. These pigs were too fast! Nobody could catch them. The pigs led the people to a lush valley of rivers and waterfalls.
