Day 8: Jan 16th, 2024 | Sharks and Rays (Autumn)

Today, Costa Rica's national breakfast was served, featuring gallo pinto, egg, and plantain. The drink was a delicious pineapple and mint mix that was extremely refreshing. We then set off to Cano Island to find some sharks. We were extremely lucky this morning; we saw an alligator while making our way through the river. Luckier still, we made it to the open sea and saw a pod of dolphins that played in the waves made by the boat! Evelyn caught beautiful photos of them jumping out of the water.

We arrived at Cano Island and gazed at the crystal clear blue water before jumping in. The atmosphere was perfect and the water was cool and calm. While snorkeling we were able to see all sorts of marine animals! We spotted over ten turtles, some of them even came to the surface to breathe and we could say hello. As well as turtles, there was also a manta ray, and even two whitetip reef sharks resting on the sea floor! Julia guided us through the waters, pointing out fish we've seen in the past days and the growth of the coral.

For lunch, we had delicious sandwiches with egg, cucumber, and hummus with the option of two spicy sauces, and coconut peanut cocoa balls for dessert. We shortly walked onto Cano Island and climbed to the viewpoint to look across the beach and sea, which had a beautiful lookout. When we returned to the beach we found all kinds of hermit crabs of tons of different sizes and beautiful shells that we held and let climb over our hands and arms. After the beach, we boarded the boat once again to find more marine animals in the great blue sea!

On the second snorkel, we spotted more turtles and a bunch more fish! Everyone tried free diving today and reached new depths (literally). On the ride back everyone shared lighthearted conversations and took in the beautiful scenery of the mangroves. We spent our free time enjoying music and card games until it was time for our class on the amazing marine corridor! We finished the day with a delectable self-serve dinner with multiple salads, and potatoes, cauliflower, stuffed tomatoes, and a refreshing pineapple drink.
